Master Leader – Mob Psycho 100 Episode 11 Reaction

Hey All~!

Reigen, tracking Mob’s cell phone, arrives at Seventh Division. The Claw lackeys guarding the entrance try to stop Reigen, but they let him in when they mistakenly believe he is the leader of Claw. Reigen uses this façade to help the Awakening subjects escape and attempt to convince the lackeys the error of their ways. Elsewhere, Mob, Teru and Ritsu are trapped in a cursed room that prevents them from using their psychic powers. Reigen eventually arrives and is able to free the three young espers. While trying to leave, Mob, Reigen, Teru and Ritsu are confronted by Seventh Division leader Ishiguro and the three remaining Scars Sakurai, Matsuo and Muraki. Reigen convinces the lackeys to leave Claw and make something of their lives. Reigen eventually learns that Mob begrudgingly broke his promise to not use psychic powers against people. While Teru and Ritsu fight against the Scars, Mob is stressed whether to use his psychic powers to save his friends or to run away as advised by Reigen. As Mob is about to go 100% with Murderous Intent, Reigen snaps him out of it and tells Mob that he will end up suffering from his actions and that it’s okay to run away and save himself. A brief flashback is shown to when Mob as a child first met Reigen about helping control his budding psychic powers. Sakurai comes up behind Reigen and cuts him down in front of Mob. This results in Mob going 100%.

  1. The reason Reigen was so adamant about running away all of a sudden was because he saw the parallels between the Claw psychics and Mob, and realised the danger of Mob becoming like them. How did they get that way? By using their powers to solve problems, without regard for consequence. If you wield a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail. They failed to grow up, because instead of coping with their issues in a healthy way, they just obliterated everything that stood in their way.
Mob has that power, too. But the danger in using it without restraint is the same for him. Running away may sound like the easy way out, but in fact, for Mob, it's the reverse. Using his powers would be the easy way out. If he gets into the habit of using his powers thoughtlessly, he may become like those other psychics. In fact, we've seen a bit of that same attitude in Hanazawa and Ritsu as well before Mob confronted them, and made them realise psychic powers aren't special… so it's clear how easy it is for powerful young psychics to fall into that trap.
It's not that Reigen wants Mob not to use his powers at all. He just doesn't want Mob to use them to go head-to-head with others. I'd say that it would be possible for Mob to get out of that situation without seriously harming anyone else while still keeping everyone else safe, if he uses his powers defensively. He doesn't have to confront them like he did Hanazawa; he can run away this time.
Ritsu and Hanazawa don't have that option in this situation, obviously. It's why they don't see the conundrum Mob is in. He's powerful, so he is free to choose between many possible paths. Reigen realised what was going on, however, and saw he needed to stop Mob from choosing the wrong one.
I think this, more than almost anything else, shows how much Reigen has come to understand Mob as a person. He really has been the only one for Mob to talk to about his powers for the longest time. He only met Hanazawa recently, and Ritsu didn't awaken until recently either. The bond between them goes deeper than just "con artist and naive kid being taken advantage of". In fact, that's almost a façade that just drops away when you realise how much they've come to depend on each other, and how much more they're getting out of that relationship than is shown on the surface.
Mob already knows how to use his powers. That's not what he needs a mentor for. What he needs a mentor for is coping with those abilities, realising when a problem does and doesn't require them to be solved, and for accepting his abilities as a part of himself. And for those purposes, someone who isn't psychic may even be superior to an actual psychic. Reigen can't solve problems with psychic powers, so his perspective is grounded in everyday life. He is Mob's anchor, keeping him in touch with "normal" life.
And meanwhile, what Reigen gets out of it… well… that's a story for another time.

  2. Reigen's business was in exorcism before Mob showed up, but he only handled the cases that he was capable of. Since most of his clients weren't actually afflicted by real spirits he could just make them feel better with massages and fake seances and stuff. Mob just opened the door to bigger cases for him.
He's a conman with a heart of gold. Even with his clients, he may lie to them but he still makes them feel like their problems have been solved. He addresses their concerns, regardless of whether psychic powers or spirits are actually involved.
I also love that even though he uses Mob for his powers (and lies to him to keep him around) he really does care about him. Even though Mob's power is about the only thing that can get them out alive, he doesn't want Mob to have to stoop to murder and psychologically suffer from it.

  3. Mob's 100% murderous intent is probably one of the most chilling scenes in anime.

Imagine innocent Mob crushing people Alluka style ?
