StarTalk Podcast: Understanding the Coronavirus (COVID-19)

On this episode of StarTalk Radio, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice sit down with Dr. Irwin Redlener, Director of the National Center for Disaster Preparedness, to discuss everything we need to know about the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

We start with the basics: what is the Coronavirus? Irwin gives us details on the virus that’s been making waves around the world. You’ll find out what we know and what we don’t know so far. Explore what makes something a pandemic and how viruses like this come about. Learn the similarities between COVID-19 and the seasonal flu. We discuss the processes behind getting a vaccine in place to deal with this issue. In the meantime, Irwin tells us all the things we can do to be preventative.

We discuss whether people are over-reacting to the outbreak. Irwin explains why paying attention to the updates about the virus is appropriate and why going over the top and panicking is not appropriate. You’ll learn about the most important aspects of disaster preparedness when it comes to virus outbreaks.

Irwin shares why clear and transparent communication between a government and its citizens is one of the most vital measures to have in place during a pandemic. Lastly, we explore the reasons to be hopeful during the upcoming weeks. All that, plus, we answer your fan-submitted Cosmic Queries.

  1. Tyson is too eloquent and likable to be silenced. Richard Dawkins, on the other hand, is a bit too direct. That's why he's been silenced during our little pandemic event.

  2. 675 thousand people in the US from the 1918 pandemic Influenza. But it was from 50 to 100 MILLION people around the world.
Oh and that "spanish flu" ( didn't originate in Spain, for the record) was H1N1. You're welcome.

  3. Everyone in the whole world should watch this video and chill out a little (Edit: especially news outlets)

  4. I thought the Spanish flu came from US soldiers at first… and then spread in Europe at the end of the war !

  5. Thank you for the knowledge, very much appreciated but you guys are not practicing social distancing. You're sitting too close to each other?

  6. Only problem is when people need groceries and can't get them because there suppose to stay home all the time, no point in surviving if you starve to death.

  7. The expert in preparedness was perplexed as to why this virus was (a few weeks into the pandemic) being feared more than the seasonal flu. Huh?

  8. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAk7aX5hksU please listen to the doctors in Korea too. The last minutes talks about being humble and not arrogant. Its science. Mask up

  9. I hope Niel knows that he's not just an academic and intellectual role model for so many, but also really a virtual father figure, at least to me. I welcome his influence very much.

  10. Please listen to me. I have covid 19 and have sucessfully treated it with the asthma medication primatine. From my experience, covid acts much like asthma, constricting broncial airways and can be treated with ephidrine or steriods. Without it, i couldnt breathe and i think this may have been over looked. Please help me get this info out to help save lives. Any questions feel free to contact me and thanks.

  11. i understand that this is a podcast or whatever and is meant to inform and entertain but it seems too light hearted for the severity of the situation. the guest was phenomenal but would have
    appreciated a bit more earnestness.

  12. So why take the vaccine if it will be the “old” virus “ and it could mutate the next year. The vaccine wouldn’t help immune system if it mutates. Which is what I hear happens to the flue virus every year. It mutates….correct me if I’m wrong
This is something I never understood about vaccines……

  13. Literally having someone right now on reddit telling me they need their N95 mask to protect their unborn child while they go shopping because 95% protection against particulates means it protects them from getting the disease.

  14. Not sure why the side arm is considered a joke. You best have some sort of weapon in your go bag. You will not have grocery stores to get food. Gonna have to learn how to eat old school.

  15. ….Science dude: "…your sidearm….no, no I'm joking!"

…me sitting here with rifles and massive quantities of loaded magazines ready to be grabbed if needed: [[looking around nervously]]

  16. First time i see neil marketing star talk instead of letting us listen to the expert
Sh th f up and spread a more serious message
Fist bumping with the other idiot instead of elbow
    Y say you are scientific
    Then
    Be scientific

  17. Listen to the science people. Social distancing. Stay 2 meters apart. Dont touch each other.

  18. "If dinosaurs had a space program, they would have knocked that asteroid out of the way."
"If you ever wondered your place in the universe, you're essentially an Uber for viruses."
"Out of everyone I thought you would've known there was a zombie virus."

Glad to know smart people also talk like my friends and I.

  19. This novel corona virus is overwhelming hospitals. Medical personnel do not have sufficient PPE. Does this happen with annual seasonal flu? I honestly don't know.
