The Slut/Virgin Mentality | Chyna Christman | TEDxCushingAcademy

Chyna Christman is a junior at Cushing Academy. Although an activist for several different causes, feminism is a particularly important topic for her. In her talk she recounts her transformation from a person who did not realize the stigma of the word slut, to someone who actively tries to break down the usage of the word. This TED talk explains the negative impacts of words like slut and prude, and creates a larger understanding for the slut/virgin mentality.

Chyna Christman is a junior at Cushing Academy. Though she was once faced with anxiety that prohibited her from public speaking, she has recently been able to overcome this in order to spread awareness about a variety of critical social issues and was able to perform her TEDx Talk on the Slut/Virgin Mentality. Among various leadership positions at her school, she also runs the sexual education program. Chyna is currently working on a book that covers the sociology behind the sex industry, which she hopes to have completed by fall 2015.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at

  1. Wait, so now calling someone a 'slut' makes you responsible for rape? In Common Law developed in England over 1,000 years we have something called jury trial and innocent until proven guilty. In fact the whole rest of the talk from 5:00 onwards is a string of strawmen. And btw, 'rape culture' does not exist in America. It's a phantom issue. Rolling Stone tried to find a university rape to fit their story and they couldn't find one. So they made one up.

  2. Slut shaming is absolutely necessary to defend any family, community, race or nation. Thanks to the rise of Islam, White Westerners are re-learning this.

  3. Ted x Highfalutin fare

Does this mean the "Slut March " are a bunch of mysogynsts ? Bad slut marchers…. shame!

At the same time somewhere iin the 3rd world a man and his family are running down the street trying to not get shot.

    Oooo those 1st World Problems.

  4. I don't agree with the whole use of the word "slut" = rape culture promotion BUT I agree with pretty much everything else. Seriously, this notion of sexual purity = VALUE needs to take a dirt nap.

  5. Good stuff!! "The judgement of others will not put you ahead" should be promoted as an anti-bullying cliche!
It is fundamental to note that in early adolescence bullying is not a conscious-formed behavior, but rather a learned social behavior from peer pressure, without regard to negative consequences.

  6. I agree with you. All this I think stems from people being unhappy, but not only that. Ignorant as well. It would be nice if the world wasn't that way, buy people are hard to change.
