Willow And Tara – How Joss Whedon Put Lesbian Sex On TV – Lesbian Stories On Buffy

Willow Rosenberg and Tara Maclay were TV’s first long standing lesbian relationship on the show Buffy The Vampire Slayer. In this video I’ll tell you more about which difficulties the creator Joss Whedon had to go through to be able to show their relationship on TV. I also compare Buffy’s coming out as a vampire slayer to the coming out of a queer person and discuss issues like bisexual erasure briefly.

Sorry for the mouse cursor in a few scenes, it was a screen capture and I forgot to remove it sometimes.

  1. man i need to watch buffy again. I <3 the willow and terra story. It always made more sens then the willow and oz story.

  2. Man, I must be clinically straight to not have caught on to that shit in the spell scene where they're both having magic sex.

  3. Casual 90s bisexual erasure, clearly the straight writers wanted to write a same sex romance but it being the 90s and all lacked the proper insight, but they definitely did the best they could with their limited knowledge. Again 90s

  4. one of the best lesbian couples in TV show media. Sucks Tara was killed. I would have liked to see the season finale with them still together.

  5. tbh i am very conflicted on willow's sexuality. as a bi person myself i relate to her experience very much but at the same time internalized heteronormativity is a thing that happens and it is possible that her crushes for oz or xander were generated from that. in any case i "stare at the camera like i'm in the office" whenever i'm rewatching a scene pre-s4 and willow says or does something very straight.

  6. I loved Tara and Willow but I'll always appreciate the relationship between her and Oz. I myself am in love with a woman. But I can also recognize when men are attractive. Plus, I don't label myself and love is love. Also, I think the relationship between tara and Willow was more sweet than any of the other relationships. You knew everyone else was getting it in, but willow's character strayed from those sexually charged relationships to be with someone she truly loves. Even after oz comes back, she knows she's in love with Tara. I always wished they'd do a season 8 and show Willow and Oz getting back together but… only in my dreams lol. sorry this is so long. Love your fellow humans!

  7. The Buffy and Spike stuff that came in season six was on a different network. UPN and not WB. And Joss has stated that the Standard and Practices department was more lax on UPN than it was on the WB.

As for the argument of what Willow is label-wise. First, she made a realization is early college, thus the line "gay NOW." Now as in now she knew and hadn't thought about her choices (especially considering Willow grew up in the'80's and '90's in a jewish household) before. Thus the reason she can say she's gay instead of bi. But really, at the end of the dat, does it really matter? A label is just another way to seperate people and create arguments.

  8. I don't know why people say willow is a lesbian she is bi. She had crushes on boys and sexual attraction to them before. She is more girl leaning now but still

  9. Thank you for this! Nice work. I might dissagree with some things or see something little diferentlly but I quess this is simply Buffy´s thing. This show is extremely open to interpretations.

Also when it comes to LGBT+ and Buffy, there is much more then Willow and Tara. There is Larry Blaisdell ("so out even [his] grandma was setting [him] up with guys"), there is Faith, who seems very bisexual (also Elisa Dushku said, she was sure Faith is Bi), there is Andrew (coming out in comics), there is obviosly Kennedy. And so much more. Oh, what a great show Buffy was.

Also Willow´s character is wonderful but Tara is somehow incredibly real. Don´t know any other show with such vivid characters.

    But I quess I am biased. 🙂

  10. no sex scenes between them? have you seen the musical episode? I thought that was quite clearly sex between witches haha

  11. Ok… i've been a fan of Buffy for almost 20 years and i watched every episode at least 5 times (10 times for my favorites)…

Willow is my favorite character and her relationship with Tara is also my favourite relationship in the show… Still, it's the first time that i ever understand that metaphorical inuendo: "Do you like cats"… gosh, i feel stupid now. 😛

  12. Awesome video and awesome show! I loved BtVS (I might have had a crush on WillowxD ) and this video was very well done. Interesting, entertaining and with lots of information 🙂

  13. I didn't know much about homosexuality when I saw their romance. It was done in such a sweet, tender way that I never even questioned it. For me, it wasn't really about Willow falling in love with a girl, it was about Willow falling in love. Only later – with the internet and by reading/seeing more comments about LGBT stuff – I realised what a big deal this actually was.

I'm glad that my first LGBT love story was from Willow and Tara. It was beautiful.

  14. I thought the "first" kiss was brilliantly done. The fact that it came as an act of genuine tenderness and love and not out of raw passion gave it so much more meaning.

  15. Was mich ein bisschen bekümmert: es ist die EINZIGE Serie, die ich kenne mit einer romantischen Beziehung zwischen zwei Frauen. Andere kenne ist nicht. Das betrübt mich.

  16. Willow and Tara were the defining romance in that show. Buffy/Angel, Buffy/Spike, these were so grand, sweeping, and soapy. Willow and Tara were grounded and relatable on top of being gay.

Her identity did confuse me because of (as you point out) the realness of her and Oz's relationship and the moment in Season 7 when in response to Kennedy asking "How long have you enjoyed having sex with women?", Willow says "It wasn't women, it was woman. Just one." Bi erasure? I dunno, maybe. People are quick to take issue. Maybe it's based on someone's authentic experience.
