Long contract simply means that you are betting on price moving up and Short means that you are betting on price moving down . One can take either position on any time in futures contracts . All contracts on CME futures , all long contracts equals all short contracts . There are never more long than short or vice versa . One Volume of futures contracts equals to 1short plus 1 long. Volume can be negative or positive . Negative volume only means the closing price is lower than opening price on that particular time frame and positive volume means closing price is higher than opening price . It never means there are more long or short . The long trade can never occurs unless somebody takes opposite side which is short or vice versa . I hope it explains how CME futures contracts work.
Alex, if you look at that chart and it is coming at the end of trend .The volume at the end of trend is considered trend ending volume and it is bearish . There is no reason to get excited , technically speaking .
